4 Budget-Friendly Healthy Habits That Can Change Your Life

By Jennifer McGregor

Perhaps you’ve decided that it’s finally time to lace up your sneakers and get into running. Or maybe you’re ready to start stocking your pantry with fruits and veggies instead of sweets. No matter what has prompted you to transition to a healthier lifestyle, you can begin making real progress by incorporating some basic habits into your daily routine.

Want to change your lifestyle for the better, without giving in to extreme dieting, exhausting workouts, or expensive purchases? Try making these four healthy habits a priority.

Give Yourself Time to Relax

There’s no denying that many people are stressed out these days. Stress doesn’t just affect your emotions and mental health - it can also affect your physical health. According to Verywell Mind, stress can increase your risk of several debilitating medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and ulcers.

It’s important to create time to relax and de-stress - and what better way to chill out than in a massage chair? Massage has plenty of benefits, but paying for regular massages can be expensive. However, massage chairs can help ease the tension in your back and shoulders that comes from sitting all day or doing physical labor. Though it’s worth splurging on, you can find massage chairs in a wide variety of prices, and you may be able to get a good deal. You could also try a more affordable massage seat cushion.

Choose to Move

If you’re spending most of your day sitting in your desk chair, you might want to start moving your body more often. According to Healthline, sitting might seem totally benign, but sitting for hours upon hours each day actually raises your risk of chronic diseases linked to weight gain, as well as overall mortality.

How can you counteract this? You can choose to move. Why not get up and take a stroll on your lunch break? (You can buy affordable shoes that are appropriate for walking.) If your office isn’t too far away from your house, consider starting your day by biking to work. And whenever you get the chance, take the stairs instead of the elevator. You can still get exercise, even without spending money on a gym membership.

Ditch Sugary Drinks

Do you ever feel like your diet is already fairly healthy, but you still can’t seem to drop a few pounds? You could be drinking unwanted calories on a daily basis. We all know that soda is packed with sugar, but do you know how much sugar is in your morning latte? How about the “healthy” fruit juice that you picked up with your salad at lunch?

Most people could benefit from drinking more water instead of sweetened beverages - chronic dehydration can cause headaches and digestive issues. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, and brew coffee at home so that you can limit the amount of added sugar and creamer. Saving money is another perk!

Want something fruity? Try juicing fruits and veggies at home and adding a little ginger to the recipe, or drinking fruity teas and low-sugar kombucha.

Read the Ingredients

Yes, reading the ingredients on your food packaging is important, but you should also check out the ingredients in your personal care products. Switching to natural, organic, or DIY skincare and haircare products can be a boon for your overall health.

Certain common ingredients, like essential oils and formaldehyde, can actually be very irritating for the skin, and they’re found in countless products. Instead of buying conventional products, why not raid your pantry and fridge and see what you can use? It’s certainly cheaper than going shopping. For example, coffee grounds make a great exfoliant, while coconut oil can be an effective moisturizer.

When it comes to adopting healthy habits that you can actually stick with in the long run, keeping it simple is the key to making it work. With a little time and dedication, you’ll see the positive impact that these habits have on your life - and on your wallet!
